Who Can I Run To: Will You Pray For Me???

Lately, I’d been feeling rather down and out. From being bedridden and going back and forth to urgent care centers all of September, to then finally being hospitalized this past week, my physical health has taken its toll on my spirit and body. Thank God for praying friends and godparents.

As I laid in my hospital bed struggling to breathe with oxygen tubes and heart monitors attached to my body, the most profound thing happened to me: my godparents, the elders of the church, took some olive oil, sung hymnals to God, placed their hands over my body and prayed over me. Growing up in the church with them, I’d witnessed them doing this on countless occasions when we used to go out to serve Holy Communion to the sick, hospitalized and bedridden people in the community. However, this was the first time I’ve found myself on the receiving end of that powerful move of God.

I must say it felt very different laying in the hospital bed with them standing over me praying and singing as my friends, both near and far, constantly sent me prayers of strength, health, comfort, and encouragement for a full recovery. Since I’m usually the one reaching out and encouraging others, it’s a warm feeling knowing that when I’m in need, there are members of the body of Christ willing and able to step up and be the driving force of prayer and encouragement for me. I’m so grateful to know that as I’m currently sick and weak in my body and spirit, I have people who love and care about me enough to keep speaking life into me.

“If I must boast, I would rather boast about the things that show how weak I am.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭11:30‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

“That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭12:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

Even last night, as I cried on the phone barely having strength to talk to one of my closest friends, he jumped right in and started praying for me. He continued to speak many scriptures over my life and encourage me with kind words to keep me reminded that God has not forgotten me. Even though it may feel like the enemy is winning by attacking my health, The Lord is on my side and will not allow me to die in this place. I now understand the true power of being equally yoked with the right people.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (Proverbs‬ ‭27:17‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

“There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs‬ ‭18:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

With my birthday just days away, I never thought I’d be in this predicament. As I sign off today and finish this breathing treatment, I ask that you pray for me too. No one is immune to the attacks of the enemy. Although I am home now, I still have a ways to go including another full week of tests, lab works and doctor’s visits as they try to determine the cause of my recent health trauma. Regardless of the outcome, I believe that with a united front in prayer under Christ, God’s healing power can truly conquer all!

“O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! Interlude For you have heard my vows, O God. You have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name.” (Psalms‬ ‭61:1-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬)
